Prepping for and presenting at the Research Showcase was a great experience and gave me a chance to see what people who are not necessarily in the Fine Arts thought of it. Speaking with many Ph.D.s, grad/undergrad students, WSUV employees and faculty members about it was amazing and the fact that they loved it proved to me I am doing something that speaks to them. I am always passionate about what I am doing, but I have not really experienced direct feedback like that.

I also presented the work to Alexis, who has watched my progress over the years, and her encouraging me to start submitting the work prompted the week I showed the work at Blue Sky. She told me it was the week of Photolucida's tour as well, so I feel that was great exposure for me. I guess in the end I am getting more comfortable with showing and talking about the work which is necessary. In the past I feared rejection and I'm sure I still do on some level, but this experience has made me feel more confident in what I am trying to say.

I additionally have worked on processing the medium format photos from December 2008, before, during and after my dad's funeral. It is a surreal process, but a good one.

kellykeigwin.com is up on the web with changes made since the last time you viewed it in December. I still need to change out the bio and resume with cleaner, more professional versions and am going to add more content to the portfolio page (including the collages from FA363). I am glad to finally have an on-line presence though and when it is completed I will feel better about giving out my business cards.

I have spent this semester refining my work and presenting it in more professional settings. I plan on continuing my growth as well as The Real Americans work. I have lists of places people have suggested I visit and some others I have meant to include. I also plan to do some collaborative work with Rhoda now that I will hopefully have more free time. As part of that I want to get into grant writing, which I have spoke of before. This is crucial if I want to travel outside of the area to capture more images.

Dene has also offered to work with me to get the completed work published as a book. I am not sure about this as I only have representation of the west coast, but perhaps if I can head up toward Seattle and a few more places in Oregon I will feel better about it. Either way, I am flattered that she feels so strongly about the work.

In conclusion, I am very appreciative of what this 499 has helped me to develop in one semester. I have only completed two sections with you, so hopefully I can sign up again, even if it a one credit section. I really value your opinion and feel that your level of expectation drives me to hit a higher mark each time I work with you. Thank you for that. I will keep in touch and will definitely see you in the Fall, even though I won't be in any of your classes. Have a good summer break!

-Kelly

Just for fun...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SfTV-aaHizI/AAAAAAAAAPg/BbpfCFxWt60/s320/g%26gincar.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5329119527303613234" />
Gunther & Gertrude in the car - Sunday at WSUV.

The Real Americans at Blue Sky & The Research Showcase

I am uploading photos of The Real Americans, shown both at The Research Showcase and Blue Sky Gallery. I wasn't sure what the response would be, but am pleased to report it was all positive. I think the fact that WSUV is not known for Fine Arts led to an increased curiosity about me and the work presented.
I did not expect to receive an award and to be told I placed 5th my first time out was a nice surprise. Secretly, I had hoped to bring home more recognition for the work being done in the FA classes and I knew it was a long shot. Afterward, I was informed that because this is a research campus it wasn't going to happen, but that I had "really impressed" the panel of judges. There's always next year and I guess small victories can win a war, right?

As for my other time spent, I have finally finished my website and as soon as my hosting is sorted out it will be live. I think you will like it. It is the same design as what I turned in last Fall, but better with added content including two of my video collaborations.

I have been enjoying my time as a teaching assistant for Rhoda this semester. I have learned a lot about planning and executing a class from the syllabus layout to project planning with students (brainstorming), selecting readings, leading group discussions and critques, presenting my own artwork and more. A very valuable experience.

I also have completed printing the "Real" Americans work and assembling a portfolio out of it (which you have seen). I felt this was very important to my presenting the work to others. My last plan for this semester is to shoot a few more Washington & Oregon locations to balance out the amount of California work in the portfolio. I also want to brighten and re-print the first images in the series to match the later ones.

I have not added up the amount of hours spent on all of this independent work this semester, but I know I blew past the required hours long ago.

Update - Research Showcase, etc.

I was accepted into the Research Showcase and have been going back and forth with the organizers on how to best display The Real Americans work in The Firstenburg Student Common. I find it interesting that they talk about showing fine art, but are actually stumped as to how I can display photographs, other than using easels. It turns out they are not allowed to hang anything on the walls unless it can be held up with masking tape. Ouch. As of right now, it looks as if I will be showing unframed prints of an undetermined size, depending on what I think will stay up with masking tape. My other option is to choose 2-3 images, print them larger and frame them to be shown on easels. I always worry about easels getting knocked over when a framed piece is displayed, but I may have to just go with the flow. I also been working on printing all of the California diptychs to add to the already completed ones and it should help me to determine which prints I show at the Research Showcase.

In addition to figuring out the Research Showcase, I am signed up for the Art Fair (the next day) and have been creating new work for that event as well. I decided I would veer away from selling photographs, because there are already a large number of "student photographers" who are going to be there. Besides, I do not want to sell my fine art photos at an Art Fair. Instead I am creating new works in my other style of mixed media, which I used to sell at Saturday Market. It is more time consuming, but I never want to follow the crowd. :)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 178px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SdAamF7MWoI/AAAAAAAAAN4/4jYSQskuBls/s320/2007_single-robot-on-wood.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318780401652357762" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 290px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SdAaliHNm5I/AAAAAAAAANw/zoqbaiW2F5c/s320/2007-illusion-clock.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318780392039095186" />

In other news, I have been expanding on the silkscreened print I did for FA 363 with a series of "you and me, me and you" prints. Ideally I would like to complete 9 or so, but have been having some technical difficulties and am starting 4 of them over. The vintage images of couples sometimes translate well, but the four I was working with failed to give enough detail, so back to the drawing board. Yoshi actually worked with me a bit one evening when we were both in the studio at the same time. Each of the prints is inspired by someone in my life I have a relationship with - friend, family member, etc. I decided to sit and free associate about each individual while writing the background text for each print. The information will be partially obscured because of the image of the couple, like the first one I did for FA 363. My intention is to complete 3 of each print (1-AP and 2 - numbered prints), give the AP to each person who inspired the piece and keep the remaining set of 2 prints. It really is about "without you, I would just be me", there would be no you and me, me and you, us or we. The individuals selected all have made some significant impact on my life and I believe I would not be the same person if I had never met them.

I have spent approximately 12-14 hours in the darkroom this semester and plan on continuing as soon as Jeanette replaces the developer so I can print from my developed negatives. I spent 4 hours one day, just to realize the prints were not crisp because the developer was bad. Frustrating, but I at least have the dark prints to look at, so I will know what I want to re-print on larger paper when I get back in there.

Stephanie and I have been working on a few side ideas as well, but other than exploring "through the viewfinder" (she more than I) we haven't launched into anything else new together, just separate projects. Well, I will admit I have been allowing her to take more candid photos of me when we are hanging around each other, so in a way I have become one her models/victims. It is an interesting turn of events since I do not normally let anyone photograph me. Body issues. In the end it's good for both of us.

Black & White California Photos

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 226px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SbQ9aSkAg_I/AAAAAAAAANo/O9sqbSECezM/s320/b%26w+proofs1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5310937382445417458" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 229px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SbQ9aM41IMI/AAAAAAAAANg/z0plTIYHQ7k/s320/b%26w+proofs2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5310937380922138818" />
These are more of the California images I have been working on. I also am slowly re-visiting the Sweet Tooth series after hitting the wall when my dad passed away. I know I have mentioned re-working the concept of some of the silk-screens. I also presented the work I have completed to Rhoda's theory class on Monday night and it was great to get new opinions and feedback. They have me re-thinking some of the finished work and instead of forcing the medical paperwork I brought back into some sort of book, they agreed it is more powerful if I present the unopened box. I told them I have been unable to open it since mailing it to myself and all of the feelings attached to it's contents. It is my dad's medical records for the last year of his life. My mom gave it to me, but made me sit through her re-telling all of the stories before handing it over. The sadness and grief I attached to that box makes it something I have been dreading opening.
It has been suggested that I present the black & white images of me on one wall and the color images (1. my dad in dialysis 2. me reflected in the foggy bathroom mirror 3. my mom walking in their kitchen) on the opposite wall. All three images only show part of each of us, which is very appealing to me. The box would be presented unopened. I still need to draw this out and figure out dimensions, etc.
Rhoda and I are going to talk more about it in a one-on-one and then I should have a definite end in sight.

WSUV Research Showcase

I have been doing research on different outlets for showing some of the new work without assembling a gallery show before I am ready. One of the things I have applied for is the Research Showcase here at WSUV. I thought it would be a good option for me and would involve displaying some of the prints along with my research and findings.

The trip to Montana was called off, so I am now moving forward with more towns in Washington since I have only included Vancouver so far. I am looking into writing a proposal for funding in order to travel beyond the west coast.

I also am re-visiting the silkscreens on plexi from last semester. Since I did not have the chance to complete them, I am arranging the images and and compositions. The paperwork I brought back from California is still sealed in the shipping box and I am not sure when I will feel up to tackling it. It contains my dad's medical records from the last year of his life. I would like to assemble something, a book maybe, but am not in the right frame of mind to do it yet.

The Real Americans - California Work

I have completed quite a few of the new images for the Real Americans series. I am going to post some here for your viewing and of course I would appreciate your feedback since you have seen the first completed set. I still am working on this and am trying to get to places outside of the area. I am planning a drive to Montana possibly next weekend over the 3 day weekend. The new images were taken during my time in my hometown and I am following the same style & layout as the first diptychs in the series. The new images lend support to the concept because I am portraying a different section of society, environment conditions, a different state even. I now have documented towns in Oregon, Washington & California. All of this has led me to realize I need to keep going and expand on the places documented. I don't know how I could afford to do it, but I would like to learn about grant writing so that I might be able to get the funding needed to take this project on the road. During the process of editing & assembling the new images, I spent approximately 10 hours on it, probably more. I obviously shot the images during the break, but the studio work didn't begin until school had started. I still have another set of images to process (I took a lot of photos in 5 towns in California) and after that I want to proceed with assembling the 50+ final images into book form using lulu.com. I have had a lot of interest from people along the way who have heard about the concept, but not necessarily seen the final images and this will give me a way to satisfy those who want to experience it or see their business and how it has been documented. I have yet to have a negative reaction, so hopefully this will be a positive experience without any upset subjects. I've made an effort to be true to the character of each place photographed without manipulation. Yes, I know we had the discussion in FA 385 about the photographer's vision automatically manipulating what will be photographed - I did not forget. :)

Touching on the project with Stephanie...we are still talking it out and I have spoken with both Rhoda and North Bank about it. We are discussing a proposal for North Bank in order to be approved for use of the gallery and Rhoda and I will be meeting this weekend to have further conversations about her involvement. Like I said in our meeting (the 3 of us meeting), I will just keep on with my own work and I know I will easily fill my required hours. I also should add that I have been in the darkroom and developed 7 rolls of medium format b&w film I took while in California as well. I will be going back in to process contact sheets and prints and will put some up here asap.

To be continued...

As I stated in my email I will not be able to finish the physical work until I return at the end of the month. I also plan on continuing into next semester because then I will have all of the materials to make the Sweet Tooth books and other items. As of right now I can give you a general break down of time spent on independent art projects (meaning they were worked on outside of any other class and what I consider to be independent study/work).

I can say in all honesty I spent more than 120 hours this semester on the following projects; Stephanie and Sophia, Sweet Tooth, Man-Made, general photography and the web site. That includes traveling, researching, documenting as well as the time I spent uploading, sorting, adjusting, printing and re-printing images.
I also spent some time in the darkroom learning how to use Fiber Paper instead of RC, but was limited because one of the lights was out and it was hard to time the chemicals (Jeanette has now fixed it).
I spent an insane amount of time researching and producing work this semester. I made it a point to come in every weekend from 12 - 7pm so I could work without interruption. You can ask any student who knows me and they will say I live at WSUV and am insanely over-dedicated. I really just don't want to waste a moment or opportunity to produce work. If I really added up the hours spent working on my artwork at WSUV this semester it would equal having no outside life. Depressing, but that's the way I prefer it.

In closing, I really want to continue doing a 499 next semester. I will be ready to finish the Sweet Tooth series when I return with my dad's paperwork. I also want to continue to build my resume and add to the website and my portfolio. I am sure I will be juggling 3 more projects to complete as well and will be living in the WSUV studio again. I hope by now you know I do not take any of this lightly and really want to get better and am willing to do the work to get there. Maybe I will even slow down and work on grant writing (my next goal) and submitting proposals to galleries.

Thanks again for everything Harrison...

Different Than My Usual Subject Matter...

These are not my usual subject matter. A couple of silly things I happened across and some that are more about texture, color and things I might use in a photomontage down the road.

Returning to my friend Joanne's house we found this lovely surprise. What else is there for a kitten to do while their owner is away?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SSdl1DsdLuI/AAAAAAAAAIo/tOT-P7orDzI/s320/joannes_cats.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5271293851059695330" />

I was walking to Starbucks when I came across this. The wind had just blown it down and it was kind of surreal. The man in the orange shirt was more concerned about the fact that it landed next to his car, while I thought the way it broke was very odd.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SSdmCz3jvkI/AAAAAAAAAJQ/rTp3-_srtSg/s320/fallen_tree.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5271294087329463874" />

I was walking by my neighbor's window and saw this dead moth. I thought it was interesting against the wood and water stains.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SSdmCZ88ZTI/AAAAAAAAAJI/FO615hHqZmY/s320/moth_remains.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5271294080372729138" />

This is one of my favorite rose bushes. It is supposed to be lavender and red, but as it fades it gets a watercolor look to it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SSdl2usl-vI/AAAAAAAAAJA/rr0oQ7heHjM/s320/rose.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5271293879782865650" />

My dog's kiddie pool. I left it out long after summer was over and this is what I found when I finally got around to cleaning it out. I really like the texture and color.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SSdl2QeTAjI/AAAAAAAAAI4/7aleeFS9Zn0/s320/pool_debris.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5271293871669838386" />

This is my bird bath in the front of my house. Once again the signs of fall and neglect left interesting colors and textures.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SSdl1jmAoxI/AAAAAAAAAIw/dgVQl9_sduU/s320/bird_bath.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5271293859622593298" />

I actually shot a series of these while thinking about photomontage. I was waiting at Les Schwab and wandered around outside. Lots of metal objects, water, rust, etc. Interesting textures and colors again. I actually like this one as is. Probably the softness of it.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SSdl0vW46hI/AAAAAAAAAIg/kA7rlGMVRzQ/s320/grafitti_rust.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5271293845600528914" />

More New Images

These are more of the new images I have been working on.

Kittens for sale under a sign about adopting cats from the Humane Society. He was in the street, looking stunned and I stopped and chased him onto the sidewalk so that he might have a shot at surviving. He sat looking at me with blood around his mouth and I debated about what to do. In the end I knew he probably would not make it, but I want to believe he recovered and I saved him from being flattened by a car. Tough situation for an animal person.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SSNQpBH_4oI/AAAAAAAAAH4/VJXMPHD0_z4/s320/squirrel.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270144654560453250" />
I was leaving my friend's apartment and saw these kids. I am not sure if they will fit into the books I will be making after the first of the year, or if a few of them should stand on their own. I feel the ones of my dad in dialysis are particularly painful to look at. It is unfortunate that young people who are being diagnosed with diabetes cannot see the future in store for them if they do not take care of themselves. I have my dad as an example and he actually did take care of himself over the past 30 years while having diabetes. His condition makes me want to avoid the same fate and if it can help to show others why they should take diabetes seriously I will feel like I have accomplished something. I also should add that my mother is more open to what I have been working on, while my father is not. I am sure he is embarrassed considering his condition after being a big, strong father figure for most of my life.

Dad at Dialysis.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SR9xAju2lYI/AAAAAAAAAGI/Vy4nldqjxkI/s320/dialysis4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5269054343452464514" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SR9xAHSJg4I/AAAAAAAAAGA/AO4XW63gkNw/s320/dialysis3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5269054335815877506" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SR9w_2GoTMI/AAAAAAAAAF4/ql5agizYAxA/s320/dialysis2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5269054331204160706" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SR9w_BEqU8I/AAAAAAAAAFw/4ldHsnPqDN0/s320/dialysis1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5269054316968825794" />

My Parent's Home. It was the starting point for The Hanford Project which I worked on in Art & Ecology class. My friend Kyle went with me and these are three of my favorite shots from that day.

1. The gate where I photographed the dome from.

2. Kyle sitting on the train tracks. The dome would've been in the background.

3. We walked around the park next to Trojan and I thought the swampy green water was beautiful.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SRzIHA94biI/AAAAAAAAAEg/MR9VmD45eGA/s320/trojan_gate.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5268305686960827938" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SRzIHsQqEQI/AAAAAAAAAEo/zIUTFeHHm28/s320/trojan_kyle.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5268305698582302978" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pMbg0167Zhk/SRzIH7pKKCI/AAAAAAAAAEw/qNBQn5LpJQA/s320/trojan_swamp.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5268305702711601186" />

Changing The Goal For This Semester

After the talk we had about my project and the realization that I could not #1 - prove how much time was being spent on research and #2 - finish the project until I had all of the materials from my mother, I have decided to add to my goals for this semester.

I have already taken, logged and reviewed approximately 1063 digital images this semester for other projects, not including the hundreds I have taken for FA 385 assignments. I can actually break down the dates and the amounts uploaded from my camera as I keep everything in dated, titled folders. At this point I will continue to work on the Sweet Tooth Project this semester, but in addition I will complete work you can see in order to prove I have done over 120 hours. Honestly I have already exceeded that between gathering and revising images in order to build my artist website and the on-going projects I work on everyday outside of school.

I am continuing the journey I started last semester with the encouragement of Rhoda, in order to start adding gallery shows to my resume and building a network for myself. Until 6-8 months ago I had never submitted my work, let alone never been juried into a show. Since the Art & Ecology show at Northbank in July I have now completed the Stephanie & Sophia installation and also been juried into a recycled arts show at White Sturgeon Gallery. I have now been asked to become a member at Northbank where I have found a support system of other female artists.

In order to keep building momentum I have decided to build my own website. I have artwork dating back to 1985. Of course I will most likely only include the work that fits into my most recent series and perhaps some of my street artwork since it is what Juxtapoz magazine featured last year. Over the last few weeks I have gone through hundreds of digital and analog images in order to start getting organized for the website. I hope to start the actual building next week.

In addition, I have gone through all 1063 digital images I have taken this semester (outside of class projects) so that I might present some samples for you here. Some fit into projects I am already working on and some were just things I found interesting.

These are from my trip to Seattle where we visited the sculpture park. I really loved walking around the city and taking photos.

1. Reflection Mural

2. Construction

3. It also is hard when doing research to obviously show proof of what you are working on, since there is no finished product.
My father has had yet another surgery due to a doctor's mistake and now half of one of his fingers has been amputated in addition to his big toe, which was also due to a doctor's mistake. Really doesn't give me the confidence to trust doctors at the moment.
Despite everything he remains an ideal patient, who never complains and always tries to look on the bright side. I recorded a 4 minute phone conversation I had with him and decided to turn it into a sound experiment. Being in Seth's class has definitely shown me some of the things you can do with sound and I think people being able to hear my dad and the subject matter of our phone conversation is important to the work I am doing.
I have a rough mix, which I plan on integrating into this installation, although I am not sure where I will introduce it.
I realize that my dad has made an effort to speak with me more often (he used to let my mother do all of the talking), but it is difficult when he is not able to talk for more than a few minutes at a time and most things in my life seem so trivial in comparison to what he is going through. I instead get sound bites and just a few moments of strained conversation before he has to get off of the phone.
I would like to upload the sound file, but do not know how to do that with a wav file.

Gathering images...

I have been gathering images I want to use to create the silkscreened pieces. Every time I am at a coffee shop, restaurant, etc and I see different brands/packaging for sugar I collect as many as I am able.
I have started this week planning the size and shape of the work, according to the size and amount of each type of packet I have. I am going to get these all mapped out and then I will be able to start working with the size of images that will be attached over the sugar packets. I plan on using 2 layers of plexi-glass stacked with spacers between. The silkscreened image will be on top and the packets beneath. I am wanting the packets to be subtle and partially hidden and I decided this was the best way to achieve that goal.

Moving Along

I am moving forward with planning and research for the next phase of this project.
I decided to start with a phone call to my mother to ask her to save all of my dad's prescription bottles, doctor appointment cards and their yearly calendar where she keeps track of all of his appointments.
She informed me that she has many years of saved calendars and you can see the increase in appointments, surgeries, etc. through this year, which has been overwhelming for them. I felt this was important to my series as it represents the future health of a diabetic which can include heart disease, kidney failure, loss of eyesight and amputation among other issues.

My father took pretty good care of himself, so looking at his case is an eye opener. It shows a bleak future for someone in my situation and it makes me want to be pro-active.

The materials I gather from my mom at the end of this year will be made into a book by me. I feel it will add to the realism of my subject matter and educate the viewer at the same time.

At this time I am working on the plans for a full installation including photographs, silk-screened images incorporating sugar and insulin, the book of my father's documentation, my pill bottles and his, possibly displayed on small shelves or as a sculpture and the construction of a sugar cube and insulin screen on which I will project home movies and images of my father and I.

I am planning on completing the silk-screened images as well as more photography during this semester and will start work on the book and finalize and prepare images/home movies to be projected next semester. I will draw out the plans for the sugar screen, but will only construct it on site at a gallery if and when it is shown to the public.

No one wants a huge ant-magnet to be stored in their house. :)

My Goals

I have decided to work toward completing "Sweet Tooth" during my Fall 08 independent study. It is an exploration of the relationship between myself, my father and diabetes.

I plan to add more silver gelatin photographs, as well as silk-screened prints which incorporate sugar and insulin as part of the inking process. Some of the techniques I will use were the suggestion of Yoshi during a discussion he and I had about my desired outcome with these pieces.

In order to create this work, I will need to use the studio room and silk-screening supplies in addition to the darkroom. I will send a separate email with a cc to Jeanette in order to make sure we are all on the same page.

During this time I will continue to work on organizing my portfolio and submitting work to various galleries and venues in an effort to build on the shows I have and will be participating in for 2008.

Purpose of this project

In April of 2007 I became very ill. After a week of not being able to eat, a constant temperature and the inability to do more than lay on the sofa I decided to go to Urgent Care.
The reason I delayed that decision is because I do not have insurance and could not afford what was sure to be a large doctor bill. They informed me I had pneumonia and sent me home with antibiotics and strict orders to drink lots of Gatorade to re-hydrate myself. After 2-3 days my condition worsened and a friend drove me to the hospital. I knew at that point something was seriously wrong and it was then I learned I had bacterial pneumonia, my body had stopped producing insulin from the stress and the sugar in the Gatorade had sent me over the edge. They also informed me my blood oxygen was dangerously low and I was running a 105 degree temperature.

After 4 days in the hospital they saved my life, but I was told I could not leave unless I learned how to inject insulin. I did and after a week at home on regular food my doctor put me on oral medication for diabetes.

Regardless of how it happened or if I would've been diagnosed eventually down the road, I had to process all of the various emotions attached with what had happened and how my life would now be different.

In addition to all of the emotions attached to my situation, I have been dealing with my father's health deteriorating as he has been a diabetic for approximately 30 years. He has had heart problems, vision problems and now is in kidney failure and has had to have a toe and finger amputated. He is at a point where he is maintaining, but not fully recovering. I now have to be there for my mom and help her emotionally deal with everything, be a cheerleader for my dad and process my own emotions about the situation as well.

I decided a year after my incident to start working through my feelings with a series of medium format gelatin prints in the darkroom class during summer session 2008 with Alexis Pike. I am posting those images here as they are the beginning of what I have started.
